Netflix welcomes a new leader for its gaming ambitions
Netflix, the famous streaming platform, is back in the news, but this time it is in the field of video games. The company has just hired Alain Tascan, a distinguished player in the industry, as the new president of its gaming division, according to Variety.
From former vice president of Epic Games to president of Netflix games
Tascan is not a beginner in the field. Prior to joining the streaming giant, he served as executive vice president for game development at a small company called Epic Games. He oversaw the in-house development of a variety of hit titles such as Fortnite, Lego, Fortnite, Rocket League, and Fall Guys.
Talent accumulation and game library expansion
Since launching its gaming project in 2021, Netflix has acquired renowned independent studios such as Night School, Boss Fight, Next Games, and Spry Fox. That’s not all! The company has also brought a large number of successful indie games to mobile devices. Thanks to these efforts, more than 80 games are currently in development, promising to significantly increase Netflix’s current library by around 100 titles.
Interactive projects based on the Netflix galaxy
Many of these new projects are interactive dramas based on Netflix original series and movies. The goal? To give fans new ways to interact with their favorite songs. Co-CEO Ted Sarandos is confident that these adaptations will open up a “significant opportunity” for fans. The proof of this strategy? A multiplayer project for Squid Game is planned for later this year.
Despite these bold investments in video games, the public has not yet fully embraced this novelty offered by Netflix. Statistics for 2022 reveal around 1.7 million daily users and 23.3 million downloads for games in the platform’s catalog.
